The sea off the north coast of Belitung is dotted with small granite islands, and a day of island hopping is the reason most people come. The classic route by wooden boat from Tanjung Kelayang takes in Batu Berlayar, the "sailing rock", Pasir Island, a sandbar that appears at low tide, Burung Island with its bird-shaped boulder, and Lengkuas Island, crowned by a Dutch lighthouse built in 1882 that you can climb for views over the reef.
Snorkelling around Lengkuas is good, with coral and plenty of fish in shallow water, and some trips add Kepayang Island for lunch and a turtle conservation project. Seas are calmest roughly from March to October; trips may be cancelled in stormy weather.
This page lists the islands themselves and the operators and resorts that run trips. Bring sun protection, water and cash for entry fees and lunch.
