Pulau Burung, 'bird island', lies off the coast between Tanjung Kelayang and Tanjung Binga. It takes its name from a granite formation that looks like a bird perched on the rocks, and the island combines small beaches, sculpted boulders and clear, shallow water.
It is quieter than Lengkuas or Kepayang because it is an optional addition on many island-hopping routes rather than a fixed stop. That makes it a good place for a relaxed swim and for photographs of the rocks without crowds. Some crews also stop at reefs nearby for snorkelling.
If Pulau Burung matters to you, ask your operator in advance whether it is included, or agree an extra fee with your boat driver when you set off; boat crews often add it together with nearby islands such as Pegadur. There are no facilities, so bring drinking water and sun protection. Sea conditions on this side can be choppier in the afternoon, so mornings are best.
School holidays and long weekends bring crowds from Jakarta: book beach resorts and boats ahead then.
