Pulau Pasir is not really an island but a bar of white sand that emerges from the sea between Tanjung Kelayang and the outer islands. Its size changes with the tide: at low water it is a long pale strip you can walk along, and at high tide it can almost disappear.
The shallows around it are a good place to spot starfish, and the contrast between the sand and the surrounding turquoise water makes it a favourite photo stop. Please look but do not lift starfish out of the water, as handling and exposure to air harms them. There is no shade, vegetation or any facilities, so stays here are short, usually 15 to 20 minutes.
Boat crews time visits to coincide with lower tides, so Pulau Pasir may come at the start or end of your island-hopping route depending on the day. Wear water shoes if you have them, bring sunscreen and keep valuables in a dry bag in case you need to wade from the boat.
School holidays and long weekends bring crowds from Jakarta: book beach resorts and boats ahead then.
