Pulau Lengkuas is a small island ringed by granite boulders and white sand, around 30 to 40 minutes by boat from Tanjung Kelayang. Its landmark is a tall white cast-iron lighthouse built by the Dutch colonial administration in 1882, which still guides shipping today and is the most photographed structure in Belitung.
When it is open to visitors you can climb the internal staircase, around 18 storeys, for a panoramic view of the scattered islands and reefs of the north coast. Opening of the tower depends on the keepers and on conditions, so treat it as a bonus. The water around the island is clear and shallow, and most tours include a snorkelling stop on the reefs nearby, where you can see coral and reef fish.
Lengkuas is visited as part of an island-hopping day rather than independently, and boats usually combine it with Batu Berlayar, Pulau Pasir, Kepayang and Pulau Burung. Mornings tend to be calmer at sea. There is a small entrance fee, payable on the island, and basic toilets. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, water and cash, as facilities on the island are very limited.
School holidays and long weekends bring crowds from Jakarta: book beach resorts and boats ahead then.
