Pulau Kelayang is the island directly in front of Tanjung Kelayang beach and often the first or last stop on an island-hopping day. Granite boulders tumble down to a sheltered strip of white sand, and the water on the leeward side is calm and clear.
The island's best-known feature is a small cave among the rocks, reached by a short scramble, which gives a view out through the boulders to the sea. Around the shore there are good spots for swimming and short snorkelling sessions, and the island makes a quieter alternative to the busier stops further out.
Because it is so close to the mainland, boats reach it in about ten minutes, and it can be combined easily with Batu Garuda and Pulau Pasir if you only have half a day. There are few facilities, so carry water. Wear sturdy sandals for the rocks around the cave, and take care on wet granite, which can be slippery.
School holidays and long weekends bring crowds from Jakarta: book beach resorts and boats ahead then.
