Tepi Pantai, meaning 'beach edge', is a modern café on Jalan Pattimura with seating right on the sand at Tanjung Pendam, Tanjung Pandan's town beach. It faces west, so late afternoon brings some of the best sunset views in town, with palms and the bay as a backdrop.
The menu covers Indonesian staples and café drinks. The house nasi goreng Tepi Pantai, at around Rp30,000, gets good reviews, as do the iced chocolate and butterscotch latte. Seating is split between an air-conditioned indoor room, a covered terrace and tables on the beach, so you can escape the midday heat and move outside once it cools.
It opens daily from 07:30 to 22:00. Service can be slow when the kitchen is busy, and some guests have waited a long time for food, so order drinks first and arrive before sunset to secure a beach table. There is free parking. It is a pleasant stop after a walk along the beachfront promenade or before dinner in town.
School holidays and long weekends bring crowds from Jakarta: book beach resorts and boats ahead then.
