Timpo Duluk, meaning 'olden times' in the Belitung dialect, is a restaurant in a restored wooden house on Jalan Lettu Mad Daud, decorated with enamelware, old radios, photographs and household objects. It is the best place in town to try a broad range of traditional island dishes in one sitting.

Look out for gangan (fish head in a yellow, sour turmeric broth), pindang iga (sour beef rib soup), ikan pepes and fish cooked in simpor leaf, and crispy fried bebulus, small fish eaten whole. The signature is makan bedulang, a set meal served on a covered tray for four and eaten together, a custom tied to Belitung weddings and gatherings. Some diners feel the dulang set, at around Rp70,000 per person, is pricey for the portion, so ordering à la carte is an alternative.

It opens for lunch from 11:00 to 14:00 and dinner from 17:30 to 20:30, and closes on Tuesdays. There is no car park, so park on the roadside. Some dishes sell out, so arrive early in each session.

School holidays and long weekends bring crowds from Jakarta: book beach resorts and boats ahead then.
