Gangan Wani is a small family restaurant on Jalan Pattimura, near Tanjung Pendam, with plastic chairs under a tin roof and a big painted welcome sign. It became widely known after Indonesian food reviewers featured it, and it remains a favourite with visitors looking for an authentic version of Belitung's signature fish soup.
The house speciality is gangan kakap merah, red snapper cooked to order in a turmeric-heavy, sour and spicy broth, with the chilli level adjusted to your request. The other must-order is fried bebulus, tiny crispy fish served with fresh sambal. Because everything is made fresh, allow about 20 minutes for food to arrive. Prices are fair, especially compared with the bigger tourist restaurants.
It opens daily from 07:00 to 19:30, making it a good lunch stop. The setting is basic and could be cleaner, but the food is the reason to come. The owner cooks herself and is friendly and chatty with guests.
School holidays and long weekends bring crowds from Jakarta: book beach resorts and boats ahead then.
