Danau Gelam is a relaxed eating spot beside a small lake fringed by gelam trees in Tanjung Rusa, a fishing village on the south-east coast of the Membalong district. Paths and wooden walkways lead around the water, and the village setting, far from traffic, is the opposite of the busy north-coast restaurants.
The speciality is bedulang, the traditional Belitung way of eating: a set of local dishes brought to the table on a dulang tray under a woven cover, then shared by four people sitting together. A bedulang set costs around Rp250,000 and is enough for four. Coffee is served too, and there is karaoke for groups. It has a prayer room and clean toilets.
It opens from 14:00 to 23:00 on weekdays and from 09:00 at weekends. Call ahead to order bedulang, as it is prepared in advance. Tanjung Rusa is a long drive from Tanjung Pandan, so combine it with other sights in the south of the island.
School holidays and long weekends bring crowds from Jakarta: book beach resorts and boats ahead then.
