Rumah Makan Man Lie is the oldest restaurant in the centre of Kelapa Kampit, a former tin-mining town in northern East Belitung that was once nicknamed a 'cowboy town'. The family business has served customers since the 1950s, through the boom years of the mines, and is now run by the second generation. A brochure inside tells some of that history.
The kitchen serves Belitung and Chinese-Indonesian dishes from a buffet-style counter as well as to order. Its mie Belitung comes in small, snack-sized portions; the gado-gado is the house recommendation, and the firm fish balls, fried crab and simple rice plates with vegetables and protein are popular. A meal costs around Rp30,000. Wash it down with es jeruk kunci.
Man Lie opens daily from 06:00 to 20:00 and doubles as a mini-market selling local snacks and souvenirs. It sits on the main road between the airport and Manggar, making it a natural stop when crossing the island to East Belitung. There is a free car park.
School holidays and long weekends bring crowds from Jakarta: book beach resorts and boats ahead then.
