Rumah Makan Fega is the restaurant most visitors to Manggar are taken to, and it handles everything from family lunches to coach tours. It sits on Jalan Jenderal Sudirman on the shore of a lake, with landscaped gardens, covered pavilions, swings and a wooden jetty where you can eat over the water if you do not mind the breeze.
The menu is built around fish, squid, prawns and crab. The most recommended dishes are ikan bakar dua rasa (fish grilled two ways), grilled tenggiri mackerel with sweet soy, stir-fried genjer and kangkung, and a punchy sambal terasi. Freshness is usually good, though a few diners have found the fish less fresh on busy days. Prices are reasonable for the setting.
Fega is a lunch venue, open daily from 09:00 to 16:00, so plan it into a day trip from Tanjung Pandan or a stop on the way to Burung Mandi beach. The car park takes several buses. Toilets could be better maintained. Ask for a table on the jetty or near the lake for the best views.
School holidays and long weekends bring crowds from Jakarta: book beach resorts and boats ahead then.
