Bakmee Hotplate is a casual noodle shop in the Padang district of Manggar that has been a local favourite for years. It recently moved to new premises across the road from its original spot, and regulars say the taste has stayed the same while the side dishes have improved.
The speciality is bakmi served on a sizzling iron hotplate, topped with chicken, beef or katsu chicken and green vegetables, so it arrives at the table still crackling. Add dumplings or pangsit, and try the bakso Malang meatballs, which the shop also serves. It is comfort food at very low prices, and portions are generous.
Bakmee Hotplate opens daily from 14:00 to 21:00, so it is an afternoon and dinner spot rather than a breakfast stop. The setting is simple, but the food is consistent. It works well for a cheap evening meal before heading out to Manggar's coffee shops, and it is close to Warung Kopi 1001 on the same side of town.
School holidays and long weekends bring crowds from Jakarta: book beach resorts and boats ahead then.
