Tugu Satam stands at the main roundabout in the heart of Tanjung Pandan, and is the town's best-known landmark. The monument is topped by a giant replica of a satam stone, the glossy black tektite that is unique to Belitung and formed, according to geologists, by a meteorite impact millions of years ago. Satam was historically found during tin mining and has become a symbol of the island; you will see it sold as jewellery and souvenirs.

The roundabout is surrounded by fountains and small gardens and is lit up at night, when it is busiest. Around it are some of the town's older shophouses, cafés and the traditional coffee houses for which Tanjung Pandan is known, so it makes a natural starting point for a short walk.

There is no entry fee. Traffic circles the monument, so cross carefully and use the pedestrian areas. If you want to buy satam, choose a reputable shop in town and ask about authenticity, as imitations exist. Combine it with Kong Djie coffee or a bowl of mie Belitung nearby.

School holidays and long weekends bring crowds from Jakarta: book beach resorts and boats ahead then.
