Rumah Adat Belitung is a reconstructed traditional Belitung Malay house on Jalan Gajah Mada, close to the centre of Tanjung Pandan. Built of timber and raised on stilts with a broad pitched roof, it illustrates how local households lived before modern building took over, and it is used for cultural events and as a small visitor attraction.
Inside you can see rooms laid out with traditional furniture, household items and textiles, and learn about Belitung customs such as the begawai wedding feast and the makan bedulang communal meal, in which four people share dishes served on a tray. The garden in front is well kept, and the house is a popular backdrop for photos in traditional dress.
It is a short stop of 20 to 40 minutes and works well combined with the Museum Tanjungpandan, Tugu Satam and a coffee in town. Entry is free or very cheap. Visit in the morning before the midday heat, dress modestly, and remove your shoes before going inside.
School holidays and long weekends bring crowds from Jakarta: book beach resorts and boats ahead then.
