Pantai Tanjung Pendam is the beach closest to the centre of Tanjung Pandan, set in a landscaped seafront park on the west side of town. It is not a beach for swimming or for white-sand scenery like the north coast; the water is shallow and muddy at low tide. Its appeal is the atmosphere in the evening.
From late afternoon, families and young people come to walk along the shore, sit on the sea wall and watch the sun set over the Gaspar Strait, with small islands silhouetted on the horizon. Food carts and stalls set up selling snacks, grilled corn, drinks and local favourites, and there is a children's play area and open lawns.
It is a five-minute drive from most town hotels, making it an easy first-evening outing after arriving in Belitung. Sunset is usually around 18:00 to 18:30. Parking is cheap and there is a small entry charge for vehicles. Pair it with dinner in town, where you can try mie Belitung or seafood.
School holidays and long weekends bring crowds from Jakarta: book beach resorts and boats ahead then.
