Kupi Tanggar Belitong Kite is a halal-certified traditional coffee and breakfast spot on Jalan Gegedek, a few steps from the Batu Satam monument in central Tanjung Pandan. The name refers to its coffee: kupi tanggar is coffee boiled ('ditanggar') in the old island way, which many people find gentler on the stomach than standard brews.
The menu lists several versions: kupi tanggar pugak (black, no sugar), black with optional sugar, with milk, and kupi tanggar gemok with brown sugar. Alongside the coffee are traditional Belitung foods that are now hard to find, including dishes made from processed cassava, grain porridges and small rice parcels wrapped in leaves. Staff explain the origins of each dish, which makes it a good introduction to the island's food culture.
It opens from 06:00 to 17:00 Monday to Saturday and until around noon on Sundays, and breakfast is the best time to visit. It is cash only and inexpensive. Combine it with a stroll around the old town and the nearby Kong Djie coffee shop on Jalan Siburik.
School holidays and long weekends bring crowds from Jakarta: book beach resorts and boats ahead then.
