Kelenteng Hok Tek Che is a Chinese temple on Jalan Siburik Timur in the old centre of Tanjung Pandan. Dedicated to Hok Tek Ceng Sin, the earth god associated with prosperity, it is a compact, brightly painted building with a curved tiled roof topped by dragons, red lanterns and guardian figures painted on the façade.
Belitung has a large community of Chinese descent, many with Hakka roots, whose ancestors came to work in the tin mines, and temples like this remain an active part of town life. Inside, incense smoke drifts past altars, offerings and carved woodwork. It is busiest around Chinese New Year and the full-moon festivals, when you may see lion dances and ceremonies nearby.
The temple is a short walk from Tugu Satam and the town's coffee shops, so it can be visited in a few minutes as part of a stroll through the centre. Entry is free. Dress modestly, be quiet inside, do not step over offerings and ask before taking photographs of worshippers.
School holidays and long weekends bring crowds from Jakarta: book beach resorts and boats ahead then.
