Danau Kaolin is an old kaolin (white clay) mining site on the eastern edge of Tanjung Pandan, where flooded pits have turned an intense milky turquoise against banks of brilliant white clay. It is one of Belitung's most photographed places and a reminder of the island's long history of mining for tin and kaolin.
Visitors walk along the white ridges between the pools for views and photographs. The water is not for swimming, and the clay can be soft or slippery after rain, so stay on firm, trodden paths. The surrounding area is dusty and has little shade, and on bright days the white ground reflects a lot of glare, so sunglasses and a hat help.
Danau Kaolin is about 15 minutes by car from the town centre and is easy to add on the way to or from the airport or East Belitung. Early morning and late afternoon give softer light and more comfortable temperatures. A small parking or entry fee is usually collected by locals, and a few stalls sell drinks.
School holidays and long weekends bring crowds from Jakarta: book beach resorts and boats ahead then.
