Billiton Hotel occupies a set of older buildings just off the main roundabout in Tanjung Pandan, and guests are given a folder explaining how the three structures date from different eras of Belitung's tin-mining history. The decor leans on that past, with classic furniture and a calm courtyard around a small pool, making it one of the few places to stay in town with real character.

Rooms are simple and clean rather than large. The breakfast is a highlight: it changes daily and features local dishes. Reviewers repeatedly praise the staff, including a manager who chased departed guests to return forgotten bags. A minority found the pool less than spotless, so check it before you swim.

The location is the main practical advantage. Kong Djie's original coffee shop, Mie Belitung Atep, soto stalls and the town's supermarket are all within walking distance, as is Tanjung Pendam beach. The hotel is part of the same group as Billiton Ekobeach Retreat on the north coast, and reception can arrange island-hopping tours and transport. Best for travellers who prefer a heritage base in town to a resort.

School holidays and long weekends bring crowds from Jakarta: book beach resorts and boats ahead then.
