Tanjung Kelayang is a broad sweep of fine white sand on Belitung's north coast and the hub for almost every island-hopping trip. Wooden passenger boats line up along the shore each morning, ready to run visitors out to Lengkuas, Kepayang, Batu Berlayar and Pulau Pasir. Just offshore stands Batu Garuda, a granite stack whose top resembles the head of an eagle.
Even without a boat trip the beach is worth a visit. The water is shallow and generally calm, there are casuarina trees for shade, and a row of seafood restaurants and warungs sits behind the sand. A big colourful Tanjung Kelayang sign marks the main entrance, and several resorts and homestays are within walking distance.
Boat operators gather here from around 08:00; if you have not booked a tour in advance you can negotiate a boat on the spot, though prices are easier to compare beforehand. Late afternoon is good for a walk and for sunsets over the islands. The beach is around 30 to 40 minutes by car from Tanjung Pandan and a few minutes from Tanjung Tinggi.
School holidays and long weekends bring crowds from Jakarta: book beach resorts and boats ahead then.
