Tanjung Binga is a working fishing village on Belitung's north-west coast, a few kilometres west of Tanjung Kelayang. Many of its residents are descended from Bugis seafarers from Sulawesi, and the shoreline is lined with wooden houses on stilts, jetties and brightly painted fishing boats.

The beach itself has clear water and granite rocks at its ends, with views out to Pulau Burung and the islands beyond. It is less polished than the resort beaches, which is part of its interest: early in the morning you can watch boats coming in with the night's catch, and fish being sorted and sold along the shore. A few simple eateries serve grilled fish and seafood.

Tanjung Binga is around 35 to 40 minutes' drive from Tanjung Pandan, close to Bukit Berahu and the Sheraton area at Pantai Penarikan. Some boat operators also start island-hopping trips from here. Be respectful when photographing people and homes, and keep to public paths through the village.

School holidays and long weekends bring crowds from Jakarta: book beach resorts and boats ahead then.
