Terong is a village in the Sijuk district that has turned itself into one of Indonesia's best-known community tourism projects, styling itself a 'creative tourism village' within the Belitung Geopark. Run by local residents, it offers visitors a way to experience rural Belitung beyond the beaches.

Activities include learning to cook traditional Belitung dishes, workshops in crafts such as weaving and batik, walks through the forest and along the river at Aik Rusa Berehun, visits to local farms and evening cultural performances. The village has also built unusual eco-accommodation, including wooden pod-shaped huts set among the trees, and runs homestays with local families.

Terong is around 25 minutes' drive from Tanjung Pandan, on the way to the north coast. Most activities need to be booked in advance through the village's website or WhatsApp, and packages can be tailored for families or groups. It is a good choice on a day when the sea is too rough for island hopping. Bring insect repellent and cash for crafts and food.

School holidays and long weekends bring crowds from Jakarta: book beach resorts and boats ahead then.
