Gurok Beraye, sometimes nicknamed 'Niagara', is a waterfall in the forest near Kacang Butor village in Badau, on the lower slopes of Gunung Tajam, Belitung's highest hill. Water tumbles over a series of granite steps into a clear, shallow pool surrounded by trees.
It is a pleasant, low-key outing that shows a different side of the island: cool, shady and green rather than sun-bleached and coastal. Local visitors come to paddle and picnic, especially at weekends. The flow is strongest during and after the rainy season, roughly November to March, and can be much reduced in a long dry spell.
The waterfall is around 45 minutes' drive from Tanjung Pandan, followed by a short walk along a forest path. Facilities are minimal, so bring water, snacks and insect repellent, and wear shoes with grip, as the rocks are slippery. Ask in Kacang Butor for directions or a local guide, and avoid visiting in heavy rain, when paths become muddy and the water rises quickly.
School holidays and long weekends bring crowds from Jakarta: book beach resorts and boats ahead then.
