Batu Beginde is a massive granite outcrop in Padang Kandis village, Membalong, in the south-west of Belitung. The smooth grey dome rises above the surrounding forest and plantations, and from the rock slabs nearby there are wide views across the green interior towards the sea.
The rock is tied to local legend and is a site of cultural significance for the community, as well as being one of the more dramatic examples of the granite landscape that underpins the Belitung Geopark. A path leads up to viewpoints on the slabs; the walk is short but steep in places and exposed to the sun.
Membalong is roughly 75 minutes by car from Tanjung Pandan, and Batu Beginde can be combined with the beaches and resorts of the south-west coast. Go early in the morning or late in the afternoon for cooler temperatures and better light. Wear shoes with good grip, as the granite can be slippery when wet, bring water, and ask locally about access and any guide or parking fee.
School holidays and long weekends bring crowds from Jakarta: book beach resorts and boats ahead then.
