Warung Kupi Kuli is the traditional coffee corner inside Museum Kata Andrea Hirata, the literary museum in Gantung dedicated to the author of Laskar Pelangi (The Rainbow Troops). Set in an old-style kitchen at the back of the museum, it recreates the coffee stalls where tin-mine labourers, the 'kuli', once gathered.
Local women brew the coffee the traditional way over a wood fire in blackened kettles. Hot kopi O (black coffee) is the most authentic order, with kopi susu and iced coffee with milk also offered, plus es jeruk kunci. Biscuits and sweet snacks sit on the tables, and Google lists the stall as Mie Belitung Ngai, as it also serves noodles. Prices are very low, and there are souvenirs for sale.
Most visitors stop here after touring the museum. The coffee may not match the best shops in Tanjung Pandan, but the setting and the chance to see a traditional kitchen in use are the draw. The museum is on Jalan Laskar Pelangi, a short drive from the replica Laskar Pelangi school, so the two combine easily in a morning.
School holidays and long weekends bring crowds from Jakarta: book beach resorts and boats ahead then.
