Warung Kopi 1001 takes its name from Manggar's nickname as the town of 1001 coffee shops, and it is one of the best-known in East Belitung. The timber building with its carved signage and mix of indoor and outdoor seating is distinctive and easy to spot from the road in the Padang district, and tour guides often bring visitors here on their first day.
The coffee is smooth rather than bitter, with a light berry note; mix it with milk for a creamier cup, or try kopi madu with honey. Unusually for a warkop, the kitchen serves Belitung dishes such as gangan and pampi (flat rice noodles) as mains, plus fried bananas with cheese and chocolate, and bubur jawak, a sweet millet porridge with coconut milk. There are also teas and drinks such as hamoy. Prices are very affordable.
It opens from 09:00 and stays open through the night until about 06:00. There is free Wi-Fi but no air-conditioning, so the outdoor tables are best in the evening. Staff are friendly and the atmosphere is relaxed.
School holidays and long weekends bring crowds from Jakarta: book beach resorts and boats ahead then.
