Vihara Dewi Kwan Im is a large Chinese Buddhist temple complex on a hillside above Burung Mandi on Belitung's east coast. Dedicated to Kwan Im, the goddess of mercy, it is one of the oldest and most important temples on the island and reflects the long presence of Chinese communities who came to work in the tin mines.

Brightly painted halls, staircases, statues and lanterns climb the slope, and from the upper terraces there are views across the coconut palms to the sea. The temple is an active place of worship and draws large numbers of pilgrims during Chinese New Year and other festivals, when it is decorated and very lively.

It is about two hours' drive from Tanjung Pandan and close to Pantai Burung Mandi, which makes a natural pairing. Entry is free, though donations are welcome. Dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered, speak quietly, and ask before photographing people praying. The climb is short but has many steps, so visit in the cooler morning.

School holidays and long weekends bring crowds from Jakarta: book beach resorts and boats ahead then.
