This wooden schoolhouse in Gantung is a replica of the Muhammadiyah primary school at the heart of Andrea Hirata's novel Laskar Pelangi (The Rainbow Troops) and the 2008 film adaptation. The story of ten poor children and their dedicated teachers made Belitung famous across Indonesia, and this replica, built for the film, is now one of the island's most visited sights.
The leaning timber building stands on white sand, propped up just as in the film, with a simple classroom inside containing old desks, a blackboard and photographs. A large carved sign at the front is the classic photo spot. Small stalls nearby sell souvenirs and snacks, and the atmosphere is cheerful, especially when school groups visit.
Gantung is about 90 minutes' drive from Tanjung Pandan. The site opens daily from around 09:00 to 17:00 and there is a small entry fee. Plan a half day in Gantung to combine it with the Museum Kata Andrea Hirata, a few minutes away, and Bendungan Pice. Reading the book or watching the film first adds a lot.
School holidays and long weekends bring crowds from Jakarta: book beach resorts and boats ahead then.
