Open Pit Nam Salu is a former tin-mining site in Kelapa Kampit, East Belitung, and one of the main geosites of the Belitung Geopark. Tin was mined here for decades, first underground and later from the open pit, and what remains is a deep excavation with rust-red and grey rock walls, a green pool at the bottom and the portals of old mine tunnels.
A small visitor area at the top has information boards about the island's mining history and geology, and paths lead down into the pit. It is a striking contrast to Belitung's beaches and helps explain how tin shaped the island's towns, population and economy. Local guides can explain the tunnels and the history of the mine.
Nam Salu is around 90 minutes from Tanjung Pandan and about 45 minutes from Manggar. Opening hours are roughly 09:00 to 16:00, with a later start on Fridays. Wear closed shoes, as the paths can be loose and muddy, keep away from the pit edges, and do not enter tunnels without a guide.
School holidays and long weekends bring crowds from Jakarta: book beach resorts and boats ahead then.
