Hotel Simpang Empat is a long-running budget hotel at the Simpang Empat crossroads on the western side of Manggar. It is a common choice for families, government visitors and groups, and also hosts meetings and events in its hall.
Rooms are plain and traditional in style. A recent guest paid around Rp380,000 a night for a family suite with air conditioning, a water heater, unlimited drinking water and a large jar of coffee and tea, so you do not need to buy drinks from the hotel. The owner is described as helpful, and motorbikes can be rented at a fair price. The restaurant serves meals throughout the day. Reviews are mixed overall, with bathrooms the most common complaint, so it is best treated as a functional base rather than a destination.
From the junction it is a short ride into central Manggar's coffee shops and to the Kulong Minyak lakefront, and the beaches at Nyiur Melambai and Serdang are close by. Gantung's Laskar Pelangi sites are about 20 minutes away. Book by phone; online availability can be patchy.
School holidays and long weekends bring crowds from Jakarta: book beach resorts and boats ahead then.
