Bendungan Pice is a weir across the Lenggang river in Gantung, East Belitung, built during the Dutch colonial period to control water for the tin-mining operations that dominated the area. It is one of the most substantial pieces of colonial engineering on the island and is still in use, with sluice gates managing the flow of the river.
The long concrete structure, with its row of piers and metal walkways, is especially impressive after rain, when water rushes through the gates. Local people fish along the banks, and there is a small park area where families come in the late afternoon. Information on site is limited, but it adds historical context to the Laskar Pelangi sights nearby, which tell the story of Gantung's mining community.
The dam is a few minutes from the Replika SD Laskar Pelangi and the Museum Kata Andrea Hirata, so it is easy to include on a day trip to Gantung. Entry is free. Keep to the public viewing areas, stay well back from the water when the gates are open and do not swim near the weir.
School holidays and long weekends bring crowds from Jakarta: book beach resorts and boats ahead then.
